Waterloo Cup 1857

The twenty-second running of the Waterloo Cup took place from Wednesday 25th February to Friday 27th February 1857 and marked a significant change in the organization of the tournament. There were 64 subscribers for the first time, with the 32 first round losers relocated to the Purse, while the 16 second round losers were directed to the Plate. The prize money also increased to £1240 for the Cup. The entry conditions for the race required 64 subscribers to subscribe their nomination at £25 each, meaning winners prize money increased to £500. It supported the eighteenth running of the Grand National at nearby Aintree. The winner, King Lear, was owned by Mr W Wilson, while the runner-up Sunbeam was owned by Captain Spencer.
